Hello,
and welcome to my antique hand colored book collection.
My collection focuses mainly on books from the brief period
of the hand colored plate book -1780 through 1830, the
heyday of this art form. All books displayed are part
of my collection, so although they are not for sale, it
is my pleasure to be able to share them with you. Take
a minute to learn
HOW TO ENJOY THIS SITE.
I hope you will enjoy your visit and
share your comments with
me. So far, fewer than10% of my plates are up. Again,
welcome and enjoy and revisit as more are added.
Your comments
or questions will be much appreciated. |
"Hand
colored antique books" are a distinct art form.
They are sometimes referred to as "color plate books"
or "illustrated books". I hope your visit
to this site will be enjoyable and informative.
I am pleased to be able to share my collection with you.
The books are works of art. Each brings together
the skills of many. These include artist, author,
engraver, colorist, publisher, bookbinder, printer, and
papermaker. The inclusion of dedications, subs criber
lists and advertisers,
in some of these books, helped
to insure the commercial success of the publisher's work.
Where the names are known, they are indicated along with
other information that might be available. The period
which was the heyday of this art form was quite brief.
Most of the work was done between 1780 and 1830.
In England, this was the Georgian Period. Many changes
took place in the world at this time, especially in
Europe. Empires were won and lost. We Americans
successfully fought a Revolution against England to gain
our freedom. The loss encouraged England to open
Australia sooner than might otherwise havebee n
the case. The first beginnings of an industrial
society and the development of a middle class started.
At the start of this period, nothing on land moved faster
than the speed of a horse. Roads were generally
poor and ships and riverboats were an important part of
commerce. The living conditions for most people
were not good, to put it mildly. However, the emerging
middle class, emulating Royalty, wanted to "collect"
to show off their wealth and sophistication. Hand
colored books served that purpose. Most of the books
were done in England or France. Many English books
had text in both English and French. In the French
Revolutions, this market was lost and devastated many
English publishers. As you look at these books,
take a moment to think about who saw them and held them
in the 200 years or so before my acquiring them.
